Ode to the Television Screen
By Aplabw
Black.
Empty.
Lifeless.
A reflective surface staring back at me,
Questioning where to go today.
Flickering to life you show me
Places I’ve never been.
Faraway places in the stars
With
Floating orbs and ice rings.
You show
Voyages across voids and seas.
Across oceans
To lands across the vast expanse.
You show
Ancient lands,
Glassy sands and bursting jungles.
Places
Where I would could never be,
You show generously.
In front of your glossy frame,
Friends and family,
Gather round
To laugh
And cry.
Temporarily forgetting the baggage
That weighs on us.
You give us
Sanctuary
From the mundane,
A glimpse
Into a life
Not our own.
Adventure,
Mystery,
A look into time and space.
Many say
You’re out to get us,
Put our brains
In a stew.
I think
Not.
Instead,
You’re a window
To the rest of the world.
A peek
At the possible.
Then
Off you go.
Challenging
What I had seen.
Leaving me
Thinking
Of what it all means.
Staring
Into your
Lifeless,
Empty,
Black,
Looking glass.
This a little poem we did in my creative writing class. We had to do an ode about an everyday item. I chose the television because it often receives a bad rap and decided to give it a try to point out the good. Sometimes people forget the good things that television has done and allowed us to experience.
What a fun poem!
